What's in the field guide
The free tools exist.
They're just scattered across dozens of sites.
Most of us changed jobs a handful of times, moved more than that, and maybe lost a parent along the way. Money gets left behind. This guide puts the main official places to look in one checklist.
Official searches
From state unclaimed property to the Dept. of Labor's retirement database, PBGC, the IRS, FDIC, NCUA, HUD, VA and more. Each has what it finds, the official link and step-by-step instructions.
State sites, checked
All 50 states plus DC, each with its official unclaimed property site and who runs it, with a box to tick as you search.
Fillable tracker
Log where you searched, what you found, claim numbers, dates and status. Plus a section on searching for a parent who has died.

Numbers match the sections in the guide. Results aren't guaranteed; plenty of people search and find nothing.

Can you spot the fake?
Unclaimed money attracts scammers. The guide opens with a scam warning; here's a taste.
SPOTTER
Badge earned.
The full scam warning is on page 2 of the guide. Official searches are free, and no agency will ask you for a fee to release your money.

Search a Family Member Worksheet
Run the same searches for parents, grandparents and your spouse. One fillable page per person, plus plain rules on who can claim what.

Never Lose Money Again Checklist
What to do when you change jobs, move or close accounts, so your money doesn't end up in a state database. Includes a fillable accounts list.
SI built this because the free tools are good, but nobody tells you they exist, and the scammers are louder than the government sites. Every link in here goes to the official source. No paid finders, no fine print.

Questions
Fair questions.
Can't I find all this for free?
Yes, and the guide says so on page 2. Every search in it is free on the official site. What you're buying is the time it took to find, check and explain them in one place, plus the tracker and worksheets.
Will I find money?
Maybe, maybe not. Lots of people search and find nothing, and that's normal. The guide shows you the official places to look; it can't promise what's there.
Is this connected to the government?
No. It's an independent guide from GenX Alliance. It only links to official government sites, state-run programs and the official associations of state regulators.
Will anyone ask me for a fee to claim money?
Not if you use the official sites. Government agencies don't charge you to release your money. If someone asks for a fee, gift cards or your bank details to "release" unclaimed money, it's a scam. The guide covers how to spot it.
Can I search for my mom or dad?
You can search anyone's name in a state database, and the guide has a section on searching for someone who has died. Claiming is different: a living person claims their own money, and for someone who has died it's usually the estate or a legal heir, following that state's rules. Bonus 1 walks you through it.
What happened to Treasury Hunt?
Treasury shut down its Treasury Hunt savings bond search on September 30, 2025. Matured savings bonds are now searched through state unclaimed property offices, and the guide shows you how.
How do I fill it in?
Open the PDF in a free app like Adobe Acrobat Reader (computer or phone) and type into the boxes. Or print it and use a pen.
How current is it?
Every link and description was checked in October 2026, and the edition date is printed on every page. Agencies do move pages; the guide tells you what to do if a link has changed.
